Biliary Atresia Malaysia Association (BAMA) is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to supporting individuals and families affected by biliary atresia, a rare and life-threatening liver disease in infants. Established to provide a platform for awareness, education, and support, BAMA strives to improve the quality of life for patients through advocacy and community engagement.
Biliary atresia is a rare, life-threatening liver disease that occurs in infants. It is characterized by the absence, blockage, or underdevelopment of the bile ducts inside or outside the liver. These ducts are essential for transporting bile (a fluid produced by the liver) to the gallbladder and small intestine to aid in digestion and remove waste products. When the bile ducts are blocked or missing, bile cannot flow properly, leading to a buildup of bile in the liver. This causes liver damage, scarring (cirrhosis), and eventually liver failure if left untreated.
